2010 Census Fact Sheet

 

 

§  The goal of the 2010 Census is to count every person living in the United States on April 1, 2010, including people of all ages, races, ethnicity, and citizenship.

 

 

§  All Census data is confidential and is not released to any other organization.

 

 

§  There are only 10 questions on the survey.  There is NO long form.

 

 

§  The census population totals determine which states gain or lose representation in Congress.

 

 

§  It determines the amount of state and federal funding communities receive over the course of the decade, including Head Start programs, public transportation, programs for the elderly, emergency food and shelter, schools, and highways.

 

 

§  For this funding allocation to be fair and accurate, the goal of the census is to count everybody, count them only once, and count them in the right place; i.e. college students are counted where they go to school, people in group living situations are counted where they are on April 1.

 

 

§  Law requires responses to the 2010 Census questionnaire.

 

 

§  All responses are used for statistical purposes only, and all are strictly confidential.

 

 

 

 

§  Census Day is April 1, 2010, but forms will be mailed to each household during the last part of March.

 

 

 

 

§  A Census worker to provide assistance will contact households that do not return Census forms. 

 

 

 

 

§  Assistance will be offered to people who have difficulty reading and/or understanding the form. 

 

 

 

 

§  The Census is easy, important, and safe.  A confidential report is delivered to the President on December 31, 2010.  NO OTHER ORGANIZATION OR ARM OF GOVERNMENT HAS ACCESS TO ANY OF THE DATA COLLECED FOR 72 YEARS, EXCEPT AS AGRAGATED DATA.
