September 19th is going to be a big day! Not only will the Salina Area United Way be kicking off our 2016 year with a fun family event in Oakdale Park, we will also be ‘officially’ unveiling our new mission and vision. However, because we like you, you get to read about them here first!
As I write this entry, there are exactly 16.5 hours of school left in the 2014-2015 school year, and I can almost hear the kids (and teachers) cheering! There have been graduation parties, promotion ceremonies and Play Days. Construction has started on school buildings in Salina, and busses are being scheduled for maintenance. Summer camp arrangements have been made, and vacations are being planned. For some, THIS is the most wonderful time of the year!
Salina Area United Way BOLD Goal #3-Health
Increase the number of youth and adults who are healthy and avoiding risky behavior
"The Raising of America documentary series will reframe the way we look at early child health and development."
Most people would consider an emergency a physical or mental ailment that requires immediate attention. What happens if the emergency can't be solved by a trip to the Emergency Room or a call to your doctor? That's where 2-1-1 can come into play. 211 is a service that can be accessed across America at no cost to the person or people asking for help.
The word advocacy is rooted in the Medieval Latin words advocare and advocatia: meaning summon, or call to one’s aid. Unfortunately in today’s world, advocacy has taken on a political connotation. Most definitions today read something like: a political process which aims to influence decisions within political, economic and social systems. I, however, prefer the more simple definition of: the act of supporting a cause.

No one has ever become poor by giving. – Anne Frank
